Over the past two years, as Marvel films have hit their lowest point in terms of critical and fan acclaim, some big names in Hollywood have spoken out against the validity of the superhero film genre as a whole.
The likes of iconic directors like Martin Scorsese AND Francis Ford Coppola have expressed their opinions, with Scorsese sharing his long-held opinion that “superhero-driven IP franchises are dangerous to film culture.”
Coppola said the genre was “despicable,” and said Scorsese was “right” when he said Marvel films “aren’t cinema” and questioned whether “anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again.” ”.
Actor Chris Hemsworth he has played the character of Thor since 2011, and responded to the criticism in an interview with The Times, saying: “It seemed harsh and it bothers me, especially from the heroes. It was an eye-opener for me, the people hitting superhero space.
Hemsworth, who played the God of Thunder in the MCU, said everyone experiences downturns in the industry, adding: “Those guys had movies that didn’t work – we had them too. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions of people who watch them. Were they all wrong?”
He continued:
“Going to the movies hasn’t changed thanks to superheroes, but thanks to smartphones and social media. Superhero movies actually kept people in theaters during that transition, and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little more appreciation.”
The Australian actor also dismissed actors who spoke negatively about their experience making superhero films.
“It’s like saying, ‘These are successful films, put me in one of them.’ Oh, mine didn’t work? I’ll hit them. Look, I grew up on a soap opera. And it bothered me when actors later talked about the show with guilt or shame. Humility goes a long way. One of the older actors on ‘Home and Away’ said: “We don’t get paid to make the good lines sound good, but to make the bad ones work.” This stuck with me.
He continued: “But hey, it’s all a lesson. And if I ever go back to [Thor] I wonder how we could change it again. But there’s a superhero curse in the sense that you get pigeonholed, and I felt a little hindered from what I could do, so [I] I desperately wanted something that would scare the shit out of me. AND Furious Done.”
For now, we don’t know if we’ll see Hemsworth again as the God of Thunder, but we’ll see him as Dr. Dementus in Furiosa: a Mad Max saga at the end of the month, May 24th.
He will also voice Optimus Prime in the animated film Transformers: one in theaters September 20th. He is also in the early stages of development on a Hulk Hogan biopic, in which he will play the iconic professional wrestler.
