CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav announced that the first two new films based on JRR Tolkien’S The Lord of the Rings will be released in 2026.
The creative team is in the early stages of developing the script. While no story details have been shared, these will be the first major live-action Middle-earth films released since then The Hobbit film, and Zaslav said the first film will focus on “storylines yet to be told.”
This has also been confirmed The Lord of the Rings director of the trilogy Peter Jackson will be involved as a producer in the projects together with his writing partners, Fran Walsh AND Filippa Boyens.
According to Zaslav “they will be involved in every step of the process.” So it’s exciting! He went on to talk about the studio’s overall focus, saying that storytelling is at the heart of the company “as we strive to restore the luster of Warner Bros. Pictures.”
He added: “Lord of the Rings it is one of the most successful and revered franchises in history and represents a significant opportunity for the theatrical business.”
It was previously explained by the CEO of Embracer Group’s Freemode operating group that they are bringing the “incomparable world of JRR Tolkien returns to the big screen in new and exciting ways. We understand how valued these works are and, working together with our partners New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we intend to honor the past, look to the future and adhere to the highest level of quality and production values.
Additionally, from the beginning, Jackson said that “Warner Brothers and Embracer kept us updated every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
With Jackson jumping on board, it seems like WB has given them creative reign over what kind of Middle-earth stories will be told.
I’m just happy that they’re not remaking the original trilogy and that they’re trying to expand and tell more stories set in this beloved fantasy universe.
