ALIEN: ROMULUS Star Talks Feeling ‘Pure Terror’ As Director Gave ‘Surprises’ For Them During Filming

He looks like the director Fede Alvarez has a lot of fun with actors while filming his next sci-fi horror film, Alien: Romulus.

According to the film’s star, Cailee Spaenythe director threw some surprises at the actors while they were shooting the film, and they actually felt “pure terror”.

Spaeny shared, “I remember we did a specific shot of a scene where I’m with the Xenomorph and [director Fede Álvarez] I kept going for about… oh God, it felt like half an hour, but it was probably only 10 minutes,”

He continued, “It was just pure terror for 10 minutes straight, with the Xenomorph right there. Fede was very good at reserving little surprises like that and catching us actors off guard.”

This sounds like it would have been great! Especially while filming on the fantastic sets built for the film. It also helped that many of the effects were practical.

The Xenomorph creatures were brought to life using puppets and animatronics, and Spaeny also offered some additional insights into this aspect of the film.

He explained, “We definitely had moments where all of us kids were in the tent getting ready to go on set, and the practical effects guys would come in like, ‘You want to hear an old-time story? Gather around, guys.’

He added: “They would tell us about crazy experiences on set working in this world. To us they were like campfire stories. Those were our favorite things to listen to.

What an incredibly beautiful experience it must have been for everyone!

Alien: Romulus follows a “group of young people in a distant world who find themselves confronted with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Alvarez’s initial pitch was said to be a “really good story with a lot of characters you’ve never seen before”. The film will also be terrifying as it leans into the horror aspect of the franchise. That’s why I’m excited!

The story is set between Ridley Scott’s Alien and Cameron’s Aliens and the same team he worked on Aliens he returned to work on this film.

The film is also the protagonist Isabela Mercedewhich he also joins Archie Renaux (Shadow and bones), Spike Fearn (After sun) and newcomer Aileen Wu.

Alvarez will direct from his script written by Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott he is also a producer of the film along with Michael Pruss (The Boston Strangler) for Scott Free, with Brent O’Connor (High speed train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) AND Tom Moran (The king of donuts) as executive producers.

Alien: Romulus will be released in theaters on August 16th.
