During Wednesday’s Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon, Henry Cavill came out to talk about his two Guy Ritchie projects and dropped something about the director Chad Stahleski’S Highlanders restart. Of all the information we were given today, this was probably the most intriguing.
The original Highlanders was released in theaters in 1986 starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. As a kid I freaking loved this movie, it was action packed and scary.
It left a lifelong impression and is one of my most important cinematic memories. Listening to Henry Cavill talk about the topic was truly inspiring. He made me feel like he was interested in making this franchise great. Here are some things he said at the presentation.
“I’m a lover of original films, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was first reading the script I wasn’t quite sure where they were going to go. “
Ultimately, he decided to sign on when he realized that this would be a bigger film than the original, saying:
“But my God, we’re going so much deeper into the characters.”
Then he fulfilled his desire to arouse enthusiasm among the crowd by saying:
“If you thought you saw me work with the sword before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”
I loved Cavill as Geralt and I’m really excited to see him as Connor MacLeod. I feel like this is what this franchise needed to come back with a vengeance. This is absolutely the time to present a diverse range of films that give audiences, fans old and new, something to sink their teeth into.
Stahelski previously said the reboot is like John Wick with swords and revealed that it was in development as a trilogy. He explained that they are taking the best elements of the franchise’s story and implementing them into a single story that will be spread across a trilogy of films.
He said: “I think the TV series hit on a lot of great things that weren’t in the movie, between the viewers and all different kinds of immortals. How do we put this into a feature mode before we put it on TV?” world? Well, let’s restructure it in some parts, watch it like it’s a TV show, watch it like it’s a high-end trilogy.
He continued: “How do we tell the story of The Gathering, The Quickenings, The Immortals, and how can we really build this world even more effectively than the original design? This is what we are renovating right now. It’s about taking all the good material from the script that we had before I got involved in the project; rework the script to give us really good chapters one, two and three; and expand the world.”
He also spoke about his vision for the film, saying: “The vision that we’re trying to convey and what we’re trying to develop, I consider it very close to Star Wars. The first one is a very satisfying ending but it doesn’t do that.” “I leave the door open and that’s kind of how I see it. I’d really like to expand it to three.”
He added: “I see The Gathering running in threes. It’s complicated, don’t get me wrong, that’s why we’re still developing it. We want to be able to tell three complete stories that all fit together. I think the Star Wars trilogy, at least up until The Empire Strikes Back, is a good example of how we want to work it out.”
