For a moment, the release of Duna: second part was overshadowed by the release of AMC’s infamous Dune sandworm popcorn bucket.
The theater chain was trying to capitalize on the film’s novelty with collectors, but if they had known that people have much more twisted and demented minds than they thought, they would have done things differently.
During an interview with Variety, Elizabeth Frank, AMC’s Chief Content Officer, spoke about the overwhelming response to the sandworm bucket, which even made the film’s cast and crew raise their eyebrows at the wormy tendrils.
He said: “We continue to learn and evolve. We never imagined the Dune thing. We would never have created him knowing that he would be celebrated or mocked.”
THE Dune the bucket also has its own SNL skit! But don’t expect the theater chain to commit to producing more deranged buckets of popcorn in the future to keep the viral trend alive.
Frank continued, “Some fans are collectors. There is another group of people who are fans of specific films, who buy three different ones ghost Buster products. It’s all a mixed bag. It’s a substantial part of our food and beverage industry, but it’s not the majority of it. It also makes movies more entertaining.”
Savage Adam he actually ended up doing something cool with the Sandworm popcorn bucket by turning it into a cool diorama.
