Star Wars: The Acolyte creator and showrunner Leslye Promontory has shared some new details about one of the series’ characters, Vernestra Rwoh, from The High Republic Novels.
Rebecca Henderson is bringing to life the character of Rwoh, who in the books is “a prodigious young Jedi Knight who passed the trials at 15 and soon finds himself facing the threat of the predatory Nihil.”
In The Acolytethe Mirialan is now 116 years old and a full-fledged Jedi Master based in the Coruscant temple.
Speaking about bringing this character to the series, Headland said: “I absolutely love Vernestra. You can say that, because I chose my wife. He goes on to say that Rwoh has “been through some shit”.
Hedlund said: “That led her to abandon this adventurer character in search of fun [in the books]a little closer to the [type of] Jedi we see in The Phantom Menace.”
It’s also explained that in the High Republic books, Vernestra has a purple lightsaber, which she converted so that its blade can also become a glowing whip, which will be interesting to see if incorporated into the series.
Henderson goes on to explain, “Because he’s been around so long, he’s pretty much met everyone who’s come through the Temple and seen them all die their natural death if they lived a natural human life. She knows it [Lee Jung-jae’s Jedi Master] Sol since he was a small child.
Vernestra Rwoh is the only character from the High Republic novel who will appear in The Acolyte… for now. But there are thoughts about other characters from the books that may come into play somewhere down the road. He said: “I’ve already talked about it with Pablo Hidalgo.”
The story is described as “a mystery thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of dark secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” The High Republic is set 100 years before the start of the Skywalker Saga.
In The Acolyte, “An investigation into a shocking crime wave pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Stenberg). As new clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal that all is not what it seems….”
The series is also the protagonist Squid game‘S Lee Jung Jae as the Jedi Master, Manny Giacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, Carrie-Anne Moss, Margherita Levieva, Joonas SuotamoAND Amy Tsang.
Stenberg previously spoke about the series, saying: “In the context of Star Wars universe, it is a moment of great peace, in theory. It’s also a time of an institution, and it’s a time when conceptions around the Force are very rigid.”
He said: “And I think what we’re trying to explore within our show is when an institution has a singular conception of how power can be used… we try to provide many different perspectives and answers to that question. The idea is to honor the Star Wars ethos and ideas about the Force and also challenge them, hopefully in a harmonious way.”
Headland has said this before The Acolyte will devote a lot of screen time to the “antagonists” and described it as “Frozen meet Kill Bill.” He shared that the story will be told from the villains’ point of view and is set between the High Republic and the beginning of the prequel trilogy, “because that’s where the villains are outnumbered.”
The series is described as a “spiritual war” and includes conflicts between siblings and parents, as well as a conflict between a master and an apprentice. It was reiterated that the project is very inspired by samurai films.
It is said to focus on the emergence of the Sith, a group of dark Jedi determined to conquer the galaxy. The term “acolyte” was used in Star Wars universe to describe the soldiers of the powerful Sith Lords.
The Acolyte will have eight episodes total, with Headland, Garcia Lopez and Kogonada directing the series’ episodes. The premiere is scheduled for June 4, 2024 on Disney+.
