James Gunn is currently in the process of building a whole new DC cinematic universe for Warner Bros. and is deeply committed to production Supermanthe film that will launch this entirely new creative vision.
Gunn was recently asked on Threads about The authority movie and what its timeline is. The director’s response continues to prove that Gunn is the right choice to lead the charge at DC Studios. He handles things in a very different way than Marvel Studios. His response was:
“We won’t greenlight a film until we have a finished script that we’re happy with, and in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished. This is why some projects are moving faster than expected and others more slowly. Quality will always come first no matter what.
This is the complete opposite way Marvel operates. For many of their films, they don’t have a complete script before the cast is hired, or even the film begins shooting. It’s crazy! I’ve always said that making these films would have been much better and the production would have gone much better if they had a solid script before they started shooting. So, it’s nice to see that Gunn actually has that sense to implement that into his development plans.
Gunn and Peter Safran previously revealed that an Authority movie was in the works when they announced the first slate of projects that would make up Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters.
Gunn said at the time: “The Authority is a passion project of mine. It’s based on the wonderful WildStorm characters we’re introducing to the DCU. [They] will interact with all our main DCU characters. The Authority is a group of superheroes who think the world is broken and want to fix it by any means necessary. I think it’s a very different look at superheroes.
A release date for The Authority has not yet been set, and the creative team working on the project has not yet been announced. Other projects in development include Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: the woman of tomorrowAND Swamp thing. As for the TV project, we have it Waller, Lanterns, lost paradise, Gold BoostersAND Pacifier Season 2.
