Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) recently talked about the Fede Alvarez-directed film which reveals that the production relied heavily on practical effects. I had heard that the film would incorporate practical effects, but I didn’t know how many. It turns out they used the same team behind it James Cameron’S Aliens. Spaeny teased the visual effects work in an interview with Total Film, saying:
“We used practical effects. We had the same people who worked on Aliens. They came back. They were there creating the xenomorph. This is a creature that they have so much love for. We had puppeteers working on the face-hugger. So to see it – everything seemed so alive.
“I had to turn off my ‘nerd’ brain, because I was like, ‘Wow, this is beautiful. Ooh, you put the Giger skull…’ I had to turn it off. But it was really scary. We set it between the first movie and the second one. We were talking about, ‘How could it be a child of the two?’ So we have those intense moments, but then the actual horror.”
The actress continued speaking Sigourney Weaver influence. At one point in the trailer for Alien: Romuluswe see her coming out of an elevator with a pulse rifle, which was a great reference to Weaver Aliens. Spaeny said:
“I definitely did everything I could to bring that character to life. Watching Sigourney play that role: it’s part of the game change that those movies did. I could never have been her. But I injected everything I have in me into that character. character, and I tried to make it three-dimensional, as three-dimensional as possible. So I hope it’s there and comes to life.”
Alien: Romulus follows a “group of young people in a distant world who find themselves confronted with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” Alvarez’s initial pitch was said to be a “really good story with a lot of characters you’ve never seen before”.
The director of the film had previously spoken about the film saying, “Alien: Romulus it lasts 20 years from the first and, for me, I don’t see it as a distortion of the canon. It’s something I take personal pleasure in doing, making sure everything follows and is part of the big one Alien history of the franchise: not just in the story, but also when it comes to how to make it. I spoke to Ridley [Scott] as a producer, and I talked about it at length with James Cameron on the screenplay level. After the film was finished, I showed it to him.
He added: “Everyone is really important, from the visual effects supervisor Aliens and the guys who make the miniatures, and we hired a lot of them to work on the film. Otherwise it’s difficult to define the style, look and feel of a film the way I wanted. It was the greatest pleasure in making this film, to be able to carry on the whole process.”
The film is also the protagonist Isabela Mercede and she is joined by Archie Renaux (Shadow and bones), Spike Fearn (After sun) and newcomer Aileen Wu.
Alien: Romulus will be released in theaters on August 16th.
