Sydney Sweeney calls MADAME WEB a “strategic business decision” that led to future projects at Sony

Sydney Sweeney she is best known for her roles in hit series such as Euphoria, The Handmaid’s TaleAND The White Lotus. She’s fresh off a hit romantic comedy, Anyone but youhas a leading role in the horror film Immaculate, hits theaters this weekend and has a lot of projects in the works. So it seems pretty irrelevant that she appeared in one of the worst superhero movies to date, Sony’s Mrs. Webbut according to Sweeney the film was nothing short of a “strategic business decision.”

In a recent interview with GQ, the actress explained her decision to star in the film, saying:

“For me that film was a fundamental element, it is what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision makers over there. Everything in my career I don’t just do for that story, but for strategic business decisions. Because I did this, I was able to sell Everyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.

As for the film’s dismal reception that dampened her feelings about appearing in another superhero movie again, Sweeney, whose character Julia Carpenter is set up as a future Spider-Woman, is a little more diplomatic of his co-star, Dakota Johnson, who said he would “never do anything like that again.” Instead, Sweeney said, “I think if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love it.”
