The Lionsgate reboot Leprechaun the horror franchise is still moving forward, and the director who is developing it, Philip Vargas, offered an update. He offers some insights into what he hopes to do with the film by making it “scary as hell” and “hilarious.”
While a guest on the Splattercast podcast, via CB, Vargas shared:
“I’m so honored to be part of that project. It’s a really great franchise. For me what makes the franchise so special is that it is truly limitless. It does not need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy. We’re still trying to figure out what tone… And the balance between horror and comedy. I’d like it to be scary as hell and also funny. I think we’re going back to Leprechaun’s roots in many different ways, which I’m really excited about. But I think you also want to attract a new audience. So it’s really hard to understand.”
There is no information on the film’s plot, but it is said to be “a retelling for a new generation of viewers.” Warwick Davis he played the role of the vengeful goblin over the course of six films, although he is not scheduled to return. No casting has been announced yet.
Erin Westerman, president of production for Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, previously said: “Thirty years after its debut, this franchise still casts a spell and we are thrilled to bring it back with a new vision. Roy and Miri are two of our most trusted producers, especially for this genre, and we are thrilled with Felipe’s vision for the film as a director. In his hands, this movie should be very scary and very funny.
This is a really silly horror franchise, and the only one that was really good was the first one, and that’s probably because it brings with it the nostalgia. Hopefully the creative team behind the reboot can make a solid horror film.
