Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard recently shared some thoughts on Legendary’s new monsterverse. This time he says that the sequel is a character study and that the next film in the series is their “Fast and furious 5 Moment.”
The more the director says about this film, the more I distance myself from it. During an interview with SFX magazine, Wingard begins by talking about how this film is a character study:
“I’m sure he could show you what it would be like if Godzilla and Kong were having a birthday party in the tropics, complete with 300-foot-tall birthday cakes. You can see anything, but you can’t create things that make you feel anything.” . That’s where my interest lies. I want to do a 300 foot scale character study.”
The thing is, as I watch the trailers for this movie, they might as well show Godzilla and Kong celebrating a birthday in the tropics, complete with 300-foot-tall birthday cakes! The whole thing is just so ridiculous. If this movie actually had some kind of character development, I would be very surprised because the last two movies didn’t.
The director then went on to explain why this film represents their Fast & Furious 5 moment, saying:
“This is our Fast & Furious 5 moment, where the series is becoming able to definitively say, ‘This is what the MonsterVerse is.’”
I can’t help but roll my eyes at this comment because the last thing I want is for these iconic monster characters to be compared to the Fast and Furious franchise. Does this make Godzilla Dominic Toretto and Kong Brian O’Connor?
In the upcoming film, “The Epic Battle Continues! Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse film follows the explosive clash of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the all-powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal unknown threat hidden in our world, which puts their very existence… and ours to the test. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the stories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, uncovering the mythical battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and forever bind them to humanity.
The director had previously spoken about the relationship between Godzilla and Kong, saying: “There’s a little truce: Godzilla is in control of the surface world and Kong is in the Hollow Earth. It wasn’t, ‘Okay, call me when something goes wrong, Kong. And I, Godzilla, will come to the rescue!’ The dynamic of the dysfunctional friend-cop relationship is probably the best to describe Godzilla and Kong. My influences are always tied to the ’80s, and the ’80s were the best for that [that] plot. There are many misunderstandings: the way monsters communicate is not simple.”
The film is the protagonist Rebecca Sala (Godzilla vs. Kong), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong), Dan Stevens (Legion), Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs. Kong), Alex Felci (The Batman) AND Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released in theaters on April 12, 2024.
