Before Chris Hemsworth made his big debut as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios was planning to introduce the character to the MCU in a very different way with an animated series!
That project was developed by the acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman, and recently shared some details about the project on his blog. She revealed that the animated series would be set before the events of the first film, some story details and why the project was ultimately shelved.
“A long time ago, around 2006, I was asked to create a Thor cartoon and I got very excited, and the brief was that it should be set before the Thor movie. I did a deep dive into Thor, I reread everything Jack Kirby drew, I made up a whole story that lasted a few seasons showing young Loki going from hero-worshipping his older brother to Going to the Bad, and then they told me I wasn’t actually allowed to have any of the characters at any time in any way different from how they were in the Thor movie, so I said no thanks and stopped.”
Of course, after Gaiman retired, Marvel didn’t pursue the project any further. But now, almost 20 years later, Marvel Studios has launched its own animation studio that is developing all kinds of animated shows where they have fun with their characters.
Head of Marvel Animation Brad Winderbaum he previously said: “We learned a lot. We produced a lot of content very quickly and we are primarily a film production company. So, you can see that our first cycle of shows has a very film-like structure: they are arcs – highlighting the characters at the end; they feel like a limited series unto themselves.”
He added: “Going forward, our content will feel a lot more like television. It kind of pushes towards the horizon; it pushes towards the future and keeps people engaged for longer periods of time, in the more relaxed environment of the living room . To distinguish it, frankly, from the great cinematic experiences of cinema.”
I would have loved to see a Thor series created by Gaiman! I think it would have given us something fun and unique. But Marvel wouldn’t give him the creative freedom he was looking for.
