Angela Bassett said she was ‘stunned’ when she didn’t win an Oscar for BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER

Angela Bassetto she was nominated for a best actress Oscar for the second time last year, for her role in the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It was the first time an actor had been nominated for a role in a Marvel film, and his emotional performance in the sequel put her at the top of the list for the award. She had won the Globe and the Critics Choice Award, but the race for supporting actress remained quite open until Oscar night Jamie Lee Curtis had won the SAG Award for Everything everywhere and everything at onceAND Kerry Condon had won the BAFTA for The Banshees of Inisherin. Curtis ended up winning the Oscar and in a recent interview with Oprah Winfreythe two women lamented their utter shock when Bassett’s name was not called.

“I just knew your name was going to be called,” Oprah told Bassett. “I was beside myself [when it wasn’t]! We were beside ourselves.” Bassett responded:

“I was amazed! I was. I thought I handled it very well. That was my intention, to handle it very well. Of course it was a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So I thought, yeah, I was disappointed and handled it like a human being.

Bassett said handling the Oscar loss with grace was of the utmost importance “to me and to my children who were there with me.”

“There will be these moments of disappointment that you will experience, but how will you handle yourself in the midst of them? We will smile, we will be kind, we will be kind, we will party anyway.

Prior to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bassett had only been nominated for an Oscar once before. She competed for best actress in 1994 for playing Tina Turner In What does love have to do with thisa performance that also earned her a Golden Globe. Holly Hunter he won the Oscar that year for Plan. Following her 2023 loss, Bassett was named the winner of an honorary lifetime achievement award as part of this year’s Oscar season.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever it was Bassett’s second time playing Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her Oscar nomination made her the first person to be nominated for an Academy Award for a Marvel film. She told Oprah that she had signed on to play her character in the original Black Panther film without even seeing the script.

“Some of these places are secret with scripts, but [director Ryan Coogler] he said, “Queen.” For years I’ve said… when they ask you what else you want to play, I’ll say, “I want to play a queen.” I manifested it, evidently,” Bassett said. «Because I hadn’t seen it. She is not queen for me, she is queen for us. We are queens. My mother, my aunt, you. We are all. So often black women are considered to be on the lower end of the totem pole. NO!”

It’s so difficult when one great performance loses to another great performance. I hope that one day Angela Bassett gets the chance to play an Oscar-worthy role again, because she is a fantastic actress.
