The director of Godzilla minus one, Takashi Yamazaki, is at the top of his game right now, and there’s no doubt that he’s getting all kinds of offers from different movie studios to direct movie projects for them. But there are projects he would like to develop himself, and one of them is a live-action adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
When this was recently brought up in an interview in Japan with the TV series Bokura no Jidai with the executive producer and co-founder of Studio Ghibli Toshio Suzukisaid Yamazaki asked about the adaptation Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind many times, but they keep telling him no. Suzuki said:
“I have heard this many times from Yamazaki personally, but the answer has always been no.”
This isn’t surprising since Studio Ghibli has never approved a live-action film adaptation of its films, and despite Yamazaki being a talented director, the animation company isn’t interested in pursuing that goal. However, if Yamazaki had the opportunity, I bet he would make a great live-action adaptation.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in 1984. The film, set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is threatened by a toxic jungle full of giant insects, tells the story of Nausicaä, the princess of the Valley of the Wind. She is a courageous and empathetic leader who seeks to understand the toxic environment rather than destroy it. Nausicaä believes that humans can live in harmony with nature and the changed creatures within it. During her journey, she discovers the truth about the jungle and fights to stop the warring factions from destroying what’s left of the planet.
