A new trailer has been released for the HBO original limited series, The sympathizer, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Part spy thriller and part satire, the story follows the Captain (Hoa Xuande), a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his days as a spy are not over.
Xuande is joined in the cast by Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Fanssina, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh AND Robert Downey Junior.who plays several supporting roles and is also an executive producer.
The new trailer updates an earlier teaser with a broader look at Oh’s character and an emphasis on the double life the Captain must lead in his new home.
Don McKellar (Sensitive skin, last night) and Park Chan-wook (Old boy) serve as co-showrunners; Park also directed the first three episodes. Along with Park, McKellar and Downey, The Sympathizer is executive produced by A24; Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell for Team Downey; Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media; and Jisun Back from Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, Nguyen and Moho Film. Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden also direct. Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King and Tea Ho are the authors of the series.
