Brian Henson says the LABYRINTH sequel film is a project the Jim Henson Company is very excited about

This was announced more than three years ago Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson would direct a sequel to the classic 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth. Nothing was known about the project for quite some time, until a few months ago, when he said in an interview: “I don’t know what’s going on. We never got the script to the point where the studio wanted to make it, but I was very proud of the work we did on it.”

He also added, “Since the project is still in development, I probably shouldn’t say what the plans are because I think we had a really cool idea, but I don’t want to disprove it in case the movie gets made.”

Now, Brian Hensonson of Jim Henson and president of the Jim Henson Company, spoke about the sequel, telling ComicBook that the sequel to the beloved fantasy film remains a project the company is “very excited about.”

“Well, that’s a question you have to ask my sister. My sister Lisa, who is the CEO of the Jim Henson Company. This is a project we’re very excited about, but we can’t talk about it.”

Brian Henson doesn’t seem to know much, or at least can’t say much, particularly about Derrickson’s version. However, the main takeaway from our question is that if that version is dead, as Derrickson seemed to suggest recently, that doesn’t mean the idea of a Labyrinth the sequel is gone, only the potential sequel will probably end up looking different than it does now.

Labyrinth was a box office disappointment when released in 1986, but found a devoted fan base on home video. In the years since, it has become as much of a classic as Jim Henson’s other films, as well as many other nostalgic and memorable films of the 1980s.

The comments come as both Labyrinth AND The dark crystal are released in Digital 4K for the first time, through Shout Studios.
