Nicolas Cage says The Whole Bunny Thing in CON AIR was his way of giving Clint Eastwood a movie twist

Air conditioning is one of the many great action films to come out of the 90s. It’s a film that delivers that pure 90s movie magic with its over-the-top ridiculousness of everything. 1997 Simone WestThe directed film is really great to watch and Nicola Gabbia he made sure to add his personal touch to the story.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cage revealed one thing he brought to the film so he could deliver one of the film’s most quotable lines. He introduced the story of the stuffed bunny in a way that led him to say, “Put the bunny back in the box.” He also explains that this addition was inspired by the films of Clint Eastwood. Gabbia said:

“[Y]hen these adventure films with big stars like Eastwood, “Make my day,” and I thought, how can I take that tradition, make “make my day” so ridiculous? What can I invent to “make my day better”? Rabbits are quite funny. Well, I’m going to get my daughter a bunny – that was another idea I put on the table – and that’s why I got the bunny. Because I wanted to say that phrase: “Put the bunny back in the box.” It’s pure absurdity, but […] if you sell it with genuine emotion and real determination, as if this were the most serious thing in the world – and it is, because he has to give it to his daughter who he hasn’t seen in six years. It’s serious, she means it, but it’s ridiculous, and that’s what I like.”

I love that you call this line of dialogue “absurdity at its best”, because it is, but it still worked so well! It fits perfectly with the type of story the film tells! It’s dialogue like that that made ’90s movies so fun to watch!
