BARBIE is now the most popular movie on Letterboxd

Greta Gerwig AND Margot Robbie’S Barbie continues to thrive as it is now the most popular movie on Letterboxd, overtaking Bong Joon Hoit’s an incredible film Parasite AND David FincherIt’s the classic movie Fight club. It’s pretty wild!

So how does Letterboxd calculate a movie’s popularity? They look at how many times a movie has been listed, viewed, reviewed, or watched, in the last time period.

I mean, what can you say? Barbie dominated everything and the public loved what she offered! It’s pretty incredible because no one, not even the studio or the film’s creative team, thought it would be as epic a success as it was.

I’m sure we’ll get a sequel one day because Warner Bros. wants another billion dollar hit! But I don’t think it’s something they should rush into. It’s not easy to recapture that kind of cinematic magic or success. Robbie previously said of a sequel:

“I think we put everything into this movie. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or anything like that. It was like Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what was next.”

She went on to talk about her biggest takeaway from making and releasing the first Barbie movie, saying:

“I would say the biggest thing for me is that original films can still be hugely successful at the box office. It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake. It can be totally original. It can still be great.” , given the large budget to do so. And just because there’s a female protagonist doesn’t mean that she won’t hit all four quadrants, which, I think, is a misconception that a lot of people still have. So it’s really important that Barbie did well. As great as it is, it’s also very important that it does well so that people can, in the future, have great original ideas and have the budget to execute them properly.”

It will be interesting to see where the franchise goes from here and what kind of story they tell when they end up moving forward with a sequel.
