James Gunn says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 It wasn’t “the most pleasant writing experience”

James Gunn recently talked about its development time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and it turns out that writing the screenplay was a challenging experience for him. In fact, he admitted that it was “not the most pleasant writing experience” he’s had.

As you know, while Gunn was preparing for the film’s production in 2018, some old tweets from Gunn resurfaced and went viral and included some tasteless jokes. He was receiving a lot of heat for those jokes even though he had previously apologized for them, but due to the backlash, Disney fired him from the film. Gunn was at a point in his life where he thought his career was over.

Luckily, Warner Bros. contacted Gunn and told him he could make any movie he wanted at DC, and he went out and made The Suicide Squad. In the midst of all this, Gunn was rehired by Disney and Marvel Studios to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Over the weekend, Gunn answered fan questions on Threads, and one fan asked if Guardians Vol. 3’s delayed release date was the result of having to align with what happened in the Avengers films or simply because it was a difficult film to write. Gunn replied:

“No. Marvel didn’t change anything. I just had a hard time wrapping things up. And I was losing steam until I left and did The Suicide Squad and came back.

“But even then it wasn’t the most pleasant writing experience I’ve ever had. Just sheer willpower that made it through.”

Well, he managed to pull it off and ended up making a really great movie! I loved the film and the way it closed out the story he wanted to tell with these misfit characters. Speaking previously about the impact Disney’s firing him had on him, Gunn said:

“We went on this journey where we ended up in the belly of the beast and I was thrown out – and the people who I gave my life to by hiring me, saved me and brought me back into the fold. They pulled me into the life raft And now we can finish all this together.

“It was tough. But what I think about from that moment is the love I received from my family and friends. I think about how Zoë Saldaña and her husband came to prepare a meal for me the night after it happened. How Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff came just to hang out with me, to be my friends.”

Now Gunn has the entire DC sandbox to play in and can shape it into what he wants as co-CEO of DC Studios.
