RL Stine reveals new FEAR STREET movie will adapt THE PROM QUEEN

Netflix is officially moving forward with development of a new Street of fear horror films and R. L. Stine revealed that the film will be an adaptation of her book “The Prom Queen.” Stein made the announcement on X, saying:

“Movie news: I can finally announce that a new Fear Street movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It’s based on my book Fear Street, The Prom Queen. Good news!”

For those of you who are not familiar with the story, here is the description of the book Prom Queen: “A spring night… sweet moonlight… five beautiful prom queen candidates… couples dancing at the Shadyside High prom: These are supposed to be the ingredients for romance. But add one brutal murder, then another, and another, and the recipe quickly turns to horror. Lizzie McVay realizes that someone is killing the five prom queen candidates one after another—and that she might be next on the list! Can she stop the killer before the ball ends, forever?”

This will be the fourth Fear Street film adapted from the book series. The first three films were a trilogy consisting of Fear Street, part one: 1994, Fear Street, part two: 1978AND Fear Street, Part Three: 1666. They were all fun horror movies and were directed by Leigh Janiak.

The three films were based on Stine’s novels set in the town of Shadyside. The original series lasted 51 novels. The three films were released over the course of three weeks and tell a killer story about the sinister history of the town of Shadyside.

The films’ director previously spoke about how she hoped these first films could be the start of a Marvel-style horror cinematic universe. She said:

“One of the coolest things about ‘Fear Street’ is the fact that the universe is big and allows for a lot of space. One of the things I talked about before I was hired was that we have the potential to create a horror Marvel [Cinematic Universe], where you can have slasher killers from many different eras. There’s the canon of our core mythology that’s built around the fact that the devil lives in Shadyside, so there’s room for everything else too.

“I think my hope is that people like it enough that we can start building [more], we can think about what another trilogy would be, what standalones would be, what TV would be. I don’t even think about it exactly like on TV or in movies anymore. That’s the thing about Netflix and what ‘Fear Street’ is, which is kind of a hybrid novelty. I’m excited about the possibility of what else could happen.”

There’s no word on whether Leigh Janiak will return to direct the film, but it would make sense if she returned. Regardless, I hope the next Fear Street movie ends up being good!
