Robert Downey Junior. recently appeared on Rob Loweit’s literally! podcast, and while he was there he talked about his time playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man for Marvel Studios. At one point during the interview, Downey Jr.’s phone started ringing, which prompted Lowe to say, “Is this Marvel stuff? Are you going to tell any stories here?”
Downey Jr. replied, “Not yet,” and then Lowe went on a little rant about Marvel and how they ruined everything. He also offers Downey Jr. some advice on what he should do in this situation, saying:
“You know what I say. That phone is about to ring, honey, and I want to be on that call. I want to negotiate for you. I know what your deal is. Here’s what you do. You say, “I’ll come back and play Tony Stark for you guys again, since you messed everything up.” But I want a trillion dollars. I know what that figure should be and I want the first dollar gross of every subsequent film. This is what I would do.”
Downey Jr. laughed at Lowe’s comments and said, “He seems pretty hostile!” Downey Jr. continued to talk about life after Marvel, admitting that his film Dolittle “it just didn’t work” and how humiliated he felt. He also said he’s done some of his best work at Marvel and explains why he thinks he’s gone unnoticed:
“I felt so exposed after being in the cocoon of Marvel, where I think I made some of the best work I’ve ever done, but it kind of went under the radar because of the genre. [I] I’ve done myself a favor, because the rug has been pulled out from under me for good, and all the things I was leaning on contrary to what my understanding of trust and security was, boy, have they evaporated. And it made me capable of teaching.”
Downey Jr. was damn fantastic as Iron Man, every time he played the character he gave a great performance, but he definitely did better. Just to name a couple, Chaplin and Zodiac are a couple of my favorite performances by the actor.
