One of my most anticipated films of 2024 is Director Roberto Eggers’ Nosferatu. The film is a gothic story about the obsession of a tormented young woman (Lily Rose Depp) and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing unspeakable horror in his wake.
Willem Dafoe stars in the film as a Van Helsing-esque character, and during a recent interview with Total Film, the actor offers some insight, saying that this film and its intentions are “very different” from his 2000 film The Shadow of the Vampire, which was inspired by the original Nosferatu film. He also explained that this film is unlike any other film he has ever seen before. He said:
“I think Robert e [cinematographer] Jarin [Blaschke] we were in a great location and it’s becoming more and more refined. It’s a bigger scale, maybe not as big as The Northman, but he was at the top of his game. I just saw a few bits and didn’t get a feel for the film itself, but it was just beautifully photographed. I can’t think of another film that’s like it.”
Dafoe had previously spoken about working with Eggers again on this project, saying:
“[Eggers] it gets better and better, becomes more complex, more updated. It’s so clear when he works. It will open in December next year, which is a long way off. Trying to be optimistic, I think the studio must feel very strongly about it, because it’s a pretty tough slot, so I’m excited about it. I saw some footage while we were shooting and I can honestly say that, visually, it was unlike anything I’d ever seen. … The look and the way it was shot was amazing.”
The rest of the cast includes Nicholas Hoult (Renfield), Emma Corrin (Deadpool 3), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Simon McBurney (The evocation 2) AND Ralph Ineson (The Witch).
Speaking about the film, Eggers said: “It’s a scary movie. It’s a horror movie. It’s a gothic horror film. And I think there hasn’t been an old school gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think most audiences will find that to be the case.
Focus Features president Peter Kujawski said in a statement: “Robert Eggers’ bold direction is always a treat for fans, and we can promise that his Nosferatu is throwing a real Christmas party.”
The film will be released in theaters on December 25, 2024.
