Director Christopher Landon he no longer directs Scream VII. The director announced on social media that he is exiting the franchise, which is no surprise to me after all the drama that has unfolded over the last couple of months.
As you know, Melissa Barrara was fired from Spyglass for comments she made on social media about the Israel-Hamas conflict and Jenna Ortega also ended up withdrawing due to “scheduling conflicts” with Wednesday Season 2, but there’s probably more to its release than that. Now Landon is gone, and this is what he shared a declaration:
“I think this is the best time to announce that I formally left Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart broke for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.
“I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than that I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and rises above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something extraordinary and I was honored to be able to bask in their splendor for even the briefest moment.”
I actually couldn’t wait to see what Landon would do with the franchise. He has directed some fun horror films like Happy Death Day AND Capricious, and it looked like Scream was right up his alley. But, unfortunately, the situation has become tough for him and he moves on to the next step.
It will be interesting to see how Spyglass Media moves forward. I guess they’ll get a new director to move the franchise forward, but who will it be!? The production company has their work cut out for them.
Following the backlash on social media for excluding Barrera Scream VIISpyglass Media released a statement outlining their reasons for letting her go: “Spyglass’s position is unequivocally clear: we have zero tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech in any form, including false references to genocide , ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion. or anything that clearly crosses the line into hate speech.”
If the Scream franchise ended now, it would be fine. They basically have to start the whole thing over again because the story the creative was trying to tell is now in the garbage.
