EXCLUSIVE: Brazilian director Marcelo Gomes is heading to the Rotterdam International Film Festival next month for the world premiere of his new film Portrait of a specific Orient and Deadline can reveal the first trailer.
The film is an adaptation of the famous Brazilian writer Milton Hatoum’s first novel, “Tale Of A Certain Orient,” and is about two Catholic brothers and sisters who flee the impending war in Lebanon in 1949 to settle in the Brazilian Amazon city of Manaus to settle down to start a new life. .
During their long boat trip, the sister falls in love with a Muslim merchant, which unleashes uncontrollable jealousy in her brother, leading to a series of tragic events.
“In this film, as in other films I have directed, I am fascinated by the idea of exploring the concept of ‘otherness’. I believe the only way to overcome prejudice is to see the world through other people’s eyes. I even dare to say that it might be the only antidote to fanaticism,” says Gomes.
He adds that the work corresponds to his first film, Cinema, aspirin and vultures. The road movie, which had its world premiere at Cannes Unsure Regard in 2005, follows a German man’s journey through the Sertão (outback) of Brazil after he fled his country to escape fighting in World War II.

A portrait of a certain East is produced by Mariana Ferraz at Matizar Films in Rio de Janeiro in co-production with Italy’s Kavac Film and Brazil’s Gullane, Misti Films, Muiraquitã Films and Globo Films.
The film will be screened during the Big Screen Competition in Rotterdam, which runs from 25 January to 4 February 2024.
