New trailer for Auschwitz-set Holocaust drama THE ZONE OF INTEREST

A24 has released a new trailer for its upcoming Holocaust drama The area of interest, set in Auschwitz. The film tells the disturbing story of German SS officer Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who raised their children on a farm next to Auschwitz.

This topic has been at the forefront of my mind lately when I took my daughter to the Auschwitz exhibit at the Reagan Library, and it was an incredibly weighty and emotional experience.

This movie is loosely based on Martin Amis’ Book of the same name from 2014, and was directed by Jonathan Glazer (Under the skin). Movie stars Cristiano Friedel like Rodolfo e Sandra Hüller like Hedwig, together with Daniele Holzberg, Ralph Herforth AND Sascha Maaz.

The director said of the film: “The great crime and tragedy is that human beings did this to other human beings. It is very convenient to distance ourselves as much as possible from them, because we think we are not behaving that way, but we should be less sure of it.”

The description of the book on which the film is based reads: “Martin Amis first addressed the Holocaust in 1991 with his bestselling novel The Arrow of Time. He returns to the Holocaust again with this startling portrait of life in the “zone of interest” or “kat zet” – the Nazi euphemism for Auschwitz. The narrative revolves around three main characters: Paul Doll, the boorish, drunken camp commandant; Thomsen, nephew of Hitler’s private secretary, in love with Doll’s wife; and Szmul, one of the Jewish prisoners tasked with disposing of the bodies. Through these three narrative threads, Amis conjures a searing, profound, and darkly funny portrait of history’s most infamous place.

The film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix, the festival’s second most prestigious prize. The area of interest will premiere in the United States on December 8.
