Kevin Feige Says Robert Downey Jr. Won’t Return as Iron Man: ‘We Would Never Magically Undo’ His Death

There have been some reports from Hollywood insiders saying that Marvel Studios is looking to bring Robert Downey Junior. returns as Iron Man, along with several other core members of the Avengers team for a new Marvel film. WELL, Kevin Feige confirmed in an interview with Vanity Fair that Downey Jr. will not return to play Tony Stark, they have no plans to do so after his heroic death in Avengers: Endgame. When asked about the rumors, Feige said:

“We will preserve that moment and never touch it again. We have all worked very hard for many years to get to this, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.

It’s good to hear that. At least they understand that bringing Iron Man is not a good idea. Feige went on to talk about Downey Jr.’s casting in the film and how Marvel almost passed up the opportunity to cast him due to his dark past. Feige recalls:

“It was all simply because Marvel’s board of directors were nervous about putting all their chips into their future films about someone who’s known to have had those legal problems in the past. I wasn’t very good – and I’m still not good – at taking no for an answer. But I also don’t beat my chest trying to get what I want. I try to find ways to make it clear to others why we should go in a direction. And that’s when the idea of an audition came up.”

Timothy Olyphant was the actor that the Marvel board of directors wanted, but that audition that was shown is what won Downey Jr. the gig. Former Marvel Studios president David Maisel previously shared:

“My board thought I was crazy to put the future of the company in the hands of a drug addict. I helped them understand how good he was for the role. We all had faith that he was clean and that he would stay clean.”

In the end, everything worked out for Downey Jr. and he appeared in nine Marvel films over the course of eleven years. All the other actors involved also admired the actor and Feige explained:

“We used to joke and say Robert was the head of the acting department because everyone there looked up to him. He took them all under his wing but not in a servile sense. He just became their cheerleader.

Are you happy to learn that Marvel Studios has no plans to bring back Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man?
