The latest Disney and Marvel news, The wonders, was a fun time at the movies, but unfortunately didn’t do very well at the box office, which is kind of on par with superhero movies at the moment. Some say it’s superhero fatigue, others say it’s the studio’s choice of quantity over quality, some might even say that movies haven’t fully recovered from the pandemic setbacks, and while it might be a mix of all, no one is saying it’s because there aren’t enough executives involved, at least no one besides Disney CEO Bob Iger.
The Disney chief told financial journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at the DealBook Summit in New York this week that the main problems with The Marvels were the quantity versus quality issue that he previously said would be addressed, and the lack of supervision during construction.
“Quality needs attention… It doesn’t happen by accident. Quantity, in our case, diluted quality,” Iger said. He gave other reasons why The wonders floundered in cinemas. He said the project was filmed during the Covid pandemic and “there wasn’t a lot of supervision on set… where we have executives who really control what’s being done.”
I don’t think the executives have any idea how to make a great movie, and I think they were right to trust the Marvel boss Kevin Feige and the directors he chooses to make great films. They just need to scale back and fully focus on great storytelling again, and they should be in business again.
