There has been a lot of talk recently about the current state of the superhero film genre because the films are not doing as well as they once did at the box office. I think we all saw this coming, especially when Marvel started focusing on quantity and quality and telling the same story over and over again.
During a recent interview with Elle magazine Jodie Foster shared his thoughts on superhero movies and says it’s a phase that’s lasted “a little too long.” She explained:
“It’s a phase. It’s a phase that lasted a little too long for me, but it’s a phase, and I’ve seen a lot of different ones. Let’s hope people get bored of this soon. The good ones – like “Iron Man”, “Black Panther”, “The Matrix” – I marvel at those films and am overwhelmed by their entertainment, but that’s not why I became an actor. And those movies don’t change my life. Let’s hope there’s room for everything else.”
I have good news for Foster… people are getting sick. its! That’s why they don’t show up en masse to theaters to watch them anymore. But, Marvel Studios and DC Studios are starting to implement changes to get people excited about these comic book movies again, we just don’t know if these changes will work yet.
Foster continued to share it Everything everywhere and everything at once it’s one of her favorite movies and the kind of movie that changed her life. She said:
“The Daniels. They made perhaps my favorite movie of all time, Everything Everywhere and Everything at Once. This is the movie I will return to again and again whenever I feel depressed or sad.
“I saw it for the first time with one of my kids, and we held hands and pinched each other and cried for 45 minutes afterward. And then I saw him with my other son a week later, and he just opened a portal of connection and understanding and hope. He started telling me everything about high school that he had never told me, and we were walking in the rain crying and opening up. And I thought, “This is what film can do.”
Yes, we need more films like this.
