Taika Waititi hopes his STAR WARS movie captures the “joy and entertainment” of the original trilogy

Like it or not, Taika Waititi he is still developing his Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, and while it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon, the director continues to tease what he’s trying to accomplish with this film.

During a recent appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Waititi shared that he hopes to capture “the joy and entertainment” of the original trilogy films, specifically mentioning The empire strikes again AND Return of the Jedi with his film. He explained:

“I’m developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it’s something I’d really like to do well, so I don’t want to rush it. It’s going to spill over to the side… I want to capture the joy and entertainment of those early films like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and all those other ones, so I’m trying to figure that out. It will happen.”

These comments come shortly after the director openly stated that his Star Wars film will “piss people off.” When Waititi was asked about his Star Wars film, responded, saying, “It’s going to be… a dramatic break… a Taika Waititi movie. It’s going to piss people off.” Which is a nice thing to say to make fans nervous!

Waititi has explained in the past that he’s trying to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all the characters and locations we’re familiar with. She said that she is still trying to come up with an idea for the film and that she is “still throwing everything at the wall.” She also explained that she still hasn’t quite figured out his idea of ​​him.

The director also spoke about what he plans to bring to the franchise, saying, “Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think I’m of any use in the Star Wars universe.” universe that’s making a movie where everyone’s like, “Oh great, well those are the Millennium Falcon blueprints, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.” It’s all its own, it’s great, although I’d like to take something new and create new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like a very small story.”
