Melissa Barrera breaks her silence after being fired Scream VII.
“First of all, I condemn anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn all forms of hatred and prejudice against any group of people,” Barrera said in a statement on Instagram Stories.
Barrera’s contribution comes after Spyglass Media removed her from the horror franchise due to her social media posts about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“As a Latina, a proud Mexican, I feel a responsibility to have a platform that gives me the privilege of being heard and so I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues that matter to me “I gave a voice to those in need,” Barrera’s statement continued. “Every person on this earth – regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status – deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom.

She continued: “I believe that a group of people is NOT their leadership and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence and for peaceful coexistence. I will continue to advocate for those who need it most and for peace and security, for human rights and freedom.”
Barrera concluded her statement by saying, “Silence is not an option for me.”
In a statement following the news that Barrera would not be reprising her role as Sam Carpenter, Spyglass Media detailed the reasons why they dropped the Mexican actress.
“Spyglass’ position is clear: we do not tolerate anti-Semitism or incitement to hatred in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that blatantly crosses the line into hate speech,” the statement reads.
One day after Barrera was fired Scream VIIIt was confirmed that Jenna Ortega would not be returning to the horror film either.
