Sean Penn praises Matthew Perry’s open honesty about his addiction

Sean Penn, who appeared in two episodes Friends in 2001 said the late actor Matthew Perry was a “talented man” and praised him at their last meeting.

“I can’t say I knew him well, but I liked him a lot,” Penn said in the episode of ” Piers Morgan uncensored. “I saw him recently when we were both catching a flight from Los Angeles airport and I complimented him on what I knew about his book.”

Perry’s Memoirs, Friends, lovers and the great terrible, talked about his decades-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

Penn admitted that he had “not read the book” but said he had seen “several” interviews with Perry about the work.

“He seemed to talk about it, deal with it and be very intelligent and open about it. And he generously offers his experience to people to be helpful,” he said. “It’s tragic, I can’t say I was terribly surprised. “I don’t know what the whole coroner’s report says, but I do know that he has done a lot of damage to his organs over the years.”

Penn said Perry left a lasting impact on the world. “He had to put this history behind him and was able to bring a lot of joy to a lot of people with his talent,” he said. “I wish his family all the best.”

Perry died last month at the age of 54 at his home in Pacific Palisades. An official cause of death has not yet been determined.
