Shari Smiley, a longtime agent and manager, has died. Smiley died on Tuesday at the age of 53. The cause of death is not yet known.
Smiley has had a long career in book and film circles and recently relaunched her Smiley Management banner. She previously worked at 3 Arts, following a four-year stint at The Gotham Group. There she mainly sold the dramatic rights to various titles In a dark, dark forest, Barbizon And An anonymous girl, all of which led to bidding wars. Smiley brings a wide range of best-selling authors. She also served as counsel to the executor of the JRR Tolkien Estate.
Smiley spent most of her 18-year career at CAA, where she started as a receptionist in 1993 and quickly sold more books than some of the regular agents. As an agent, she sold rights there which later became the basis for the films Wild Lost Girl, The Devil Wears Prada, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Artemis Fowl Series, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and the TV series Sharp objects.
She has worked with many best-selling authors, including Cheryl Strayed, Gillian Flynn, Jodi Picoult, Lauren Weisberger, and Mary Kubica, to name a few. She was known as a caring, compassionate and respected representative of the enlightened game.
