Director Christopher Nolan recently attended the screening of his hit film Oppenheimer in Los Angeles where he spoke to the audience about the film’s upcoming release on DVD, Blu-ray and digital. He explained how hard he worked on the home version, which had to be retooled to work in a smaller format thanks to its spectacular sound design.
He explained:
“Obviously Oppenheimer has been quite a journey for us and now it’s time for me to release a home version of the film. I’ve been working very hard on it for months. I’m known for my lifelong love of theater, but the truth is, how the film comes out at home is just as important.
Nolan talked about the benefits of being able to own a film and hold the record in your hands. He also said that a lot of work has gone into making the physical release of Oppenheimer the best it can be as fans will hopefully watch the film many times in the comfort of their homes for years to come. Nolan went on to talk about the formatting of his film, taking a swipe at streaming services, saying:
“The Dark Knight was one of the first films where we formatted it specifically for the Blu-ray release because it was a new form at the time. And in the case of Oppenheimer, we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version […] and trying to translate the photography and sound, putting it into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come and steal it from you.
I kind of understand where he’s coming from, as I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to all my various streaming platforms looking for a movie I want to see and found that it wasn’t on any of them. . It would be nice to have a physical copy in these cases.
Oppenheimer will be available for purchase on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD and digital on November 21st.
