Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for its upcoming Marvel spin-off film Spider-Man Mrs. Web, and it looks like it will expand the Spider-Man universe in an interesting way. This is a very different type of Spider-Man movie than we’ve seen, and the trailer focuses on explaining the story’s villain, Ezekiel Sims, who is a Spider-Man-like character who poses a threat to Madame Web and her three Spider Women in the film.
It’s not entirely clear why Ezekiel Sims is attacking the four women, but at one point he mentions that they must die “because of what they become.” We then see brief flashes of the three future Spider-Women characters in costume. Like Madame Web, Sims also appears to have the ability to see into the future. I’m curious to see how this story plays out and what it teases for the future of the Spider-Man franchise.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Separating itself from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspenseful thriller takes center stage Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to face revelations about her past, she forms relationships with three young women destined for a powerful future…if they can all survive a deadly present.
Madame Web also acts Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Isabela Mercede (Transformers: The Last Knight), AND Emma Roberts (American horror story), with Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps (The Upshaws), AND Adam Scott (Separation).
Mrs. Web is directed by SJ Clarkson (Jessica Jones) from a screenplay written by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama AND Burk Sharpless. Madame Web was created by the writer Denny O’Neil and artist Giovanni Romita Jr. in 1980. Madame Web is a blind psychic who has become a major player in the world of Spider-Man thanks to her ties to “The Great Web”, a multiversal construct that ties all of the “Spider” characters together across the multiverse.
The film will be released in theaters on February 14. Watch the trailer and tell us what you think!
