Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington (Glory, Training day, Fences) has signed on to star in the directorial Antonio FuquaNetflix’s next film about the ancient warrior Hannibal, which Washington will play. Fuqua has directed Washington in films before Training day, The Magnificent Sevenand the Equalizer franchising. The film will be written by John Loganthe three-time Oscar winner who wrote Martin Scorsese’s screenplay The aviator and that of Ridley Scott Gladiator.
According to the official plot, the historical film is “based on the real-life warrior Hannibal, widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The film traces the crucial battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.
Hannibal invaded Italy riding a North African war elephant. Under his leadership, the Carthaginians achieved key victories against the Romans, allowing Hannibal to occupy most of southern Italy for 15 years. Ultimately, Hannibal was defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama after counter-invading North Africa.
Washington will soon be seen in another war epic, Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel Gladiator. Production on that film had to shut down in Morocco due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, but the director recently revealed he was editing 90 minutes of footage during the shutdown. Washington joins Paul Mescal, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger AND Pedro Pasquale in the film, currently dated for November 2024.
