THE MARVELS ends with the lowest box office opening of any Marvel film

As expected, The wonders did not perform well at the box office in its opening weekend. With superhero movie fatigue in full swing, this was highly expected. I also liked some aspects of the film, but I also knew that people still wouldn’t go see it.

The wonders it only ended up making $47 million at the box office, and that’s with the film playing in 4,030 theaters! It is now the lowest box office opening for a Marvel film, surpassing The Incredible Hulk, which was the lowest with its $55.4 million opening. Just for comparison, the first Captain Marvel the film grossed $153 million!

These are certainly worrying numbers for Marvel Studios and Disney. It’s quite strange that Marvel Studios used to guarantee big movies and big box office numbers. In recent years the quality of Marvel films has declined and so have box office revenues.

I’ve said since the early days of Marvel Studios that if they continued to produce great stories and quality films, the fans would continue to support them, well… now we see what this has led to, and audiences are starting to talk to their fans wallets. It’s not cheap to go to the movies these days and the ridiculous inflation we’ve seen in recent years doesn’t help. It’s a time when people are picky about what moves the clock in theaters.

I also have several die-hard Marvel fan friends who have told me they are leaving The wonders and wait for it to come out on Disney+ because they won’t have to wait long. They also feel like this is a movie they don’t need to spend money on to see in theaters, which I totally understand!

Reviews for the film were lukewarm and it received a B in Cinema Score, which I think is about right. It’s not really a disastrous reception from critics and fans, but it’s obviously not a film that audiences flock to see.

Marvel Studios also made a big marketing push right before the film’s release, telling audiences and fans to “be there for the moment that changes everything,” hoping to drum up some interest. That moment doesn’t come until the end credits scene and teasing it in the marketing obviously didn’t help because audiences see the writing on the wall.

Marvel thinks they know what fans want to see, but they obviously fall short of the mark. I have no doubt that we will see some big changes in how Marvel Studios moves forward The wonders bombed at the box office.

What are your thoughts!?
