If you thought Warner Bros. was done scrapping projects, you were wrong. Just over a year after WB scrapped several similar film and series projects Bad girlthey axed the CG animated hybrid film Looney Tunes Coyotes vs. Acme.
The production of the film was completed last year with the director Dave Green. He acted John Cena and co-head of DC Studios James Gunn he produced the feature film and worked on the story. Cena was supposed to play the role of the president of ACME Corporation and other cast members included Will Forte (SNL, MacGruber) AND Lana Condor (To all the guys, Alita: Battle Angel).
The WB Motion Picture Group spokesperson said in a statement: “With the relaunch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with Coyote vs Acme. We have enormous respect for the filmmakers, cast and crew and are grateful for their contributions to the film.”
This news is a little disappointing because it could have been a fun movie to watch! Forte previously talked about how much fun it was making the film and offered some details about the story, saying:
“I mean, it was so fun to make. It came out of an article that I think is decades old. Wiley Coyote sued the Acme Corporation because of all the different contraptions exploding in his face, and stuff like that. And so, I get to play Wile E. Coyote’s lawyer, and it’s a mixture of animation, and it’s like a Who Framed Roger Rabbit-style movie. And yeah, John Cena is great. There’s Lana Condor. It’s It was so much fun making it and these guys who are making it are so smart. Because you have to figure out where this animated character is going to go. It was great to be a part of. So, I’m excited to see how it turns out because, obviously, I act a lot. with a tennis ball. There’s a tennis ball for the eye line and it moves. So, yeah, I think I don’t know. I don’t know how much more I can say about that, but I kept babbling on for a while .
Warner Bros. Animation is looking to release around two films a year and some of the upcoming projects include Evil Fairies and The Lunar Chroniclesand also has several Dr. Seuss adaptations in the works, including Cat in the hat and an animated musical adaptation of Oh, the places you’ll go!. Sources say WB is “looking to shift Warner Bros. Animation’s focus to strictly theatrical-worthy products, with the goal of producing original films and films based on the studio’s IP.”
