EXCLUSIVE: The longest meter get another set of downs.
Deadline has learned that a new remake of the film, which originally starred Burt Reynolds in 1974 and was remade with Adam Sandler in 2005, is in the works at Paramount Pictures. Rodney Barnes, executive producer and writer for HBO to save time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynastywrite.
It comes from Gunpowder & Sky, whose CEO Van Toffler was an executive producer on the 2005 version while working at then-MTV owner Viacom. Toffler is producing with former MTV Films boss David Gale, who reunited with Toffler on Gunpowder & Sky and also produced the Sandler version.
The longest meter is a comedy about prison sports.
The 1974 original was based on a story by Al Ruddy, directed by Robert Aldrich and written by Tracy Keenan Wynn. Reynolds played Paul “Wrecking” Crewe, a former star quarterback sentenced to 18 months in Citrus State Prison, where he assembles the Mean Machine team to play the guard team.
It was remade in 2005 by director Peter Segal and written by Sheldon Turner. Sandler played the occasional quarterback who puts together a team in prison in exchange for a reduced sentence. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly and William Fichtner also starred, as did Reynolds.
Both versions were released by Paramount.

Barnes has a number of projects in various stages of development, including writing an adaptation of Chris Leslie-Hynan’s novel Drive around radiantly, which is being developed for Netflix alongside Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby and stars LaKeith Stanfield; writing a miniseries about the life of golfer Tiger Woods; and writing a feature film for New Regency directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
Gunpowder & Sky is behind films like Elisabeth Moss Your scentStarring Nick Offerman Heart Knock hard and Showtime’s Courtney B. Vance starred Robbery 88 as well as music documentaries included Sheryl And Everyone is everything. Last year, after Comedy Central, it signed a multi-film deal with MTV Entertainment Studios Hot holiday Film starring Kal Penn.
