Writer of Marvel’s BLADE reboot responds to claim that film’s story pushed Mahershala Ali’s lead character into fourth lead

Marvel’s fifth phase is going through some growing pains right now, after going through pandemic-related production setbacks, this year’s strikes, waning fan enthusiasm, fluctuating box office numbers, etc. . We heard about the studio firing writers and directors on the spot. upcoming series Recklessand other rumors regarding the film’s reboot Lama. But it turns out the latter may not be true.

The film Lama has been in gestation in the studio for a long time without much new coming from its production. A recent report from Variety revealed that the film “went through at least five screenwriters, two directors and one who was shut down six weeks before production.” It goes on to say that “one person familiar with the script’s permutations says the story at one point morphed into a female-led narrative filled with life lessons.” Perhaps the most shocking claim says that the main character, “Blade was relegated to the fourth role, a bizarre idea considering the studio had two Oscar winners [Mahershala] Wings on board.”

The report states that Ali was ready to exit due to script issues until the president of the MCU Kevin Feige he went back to the drawing board and hired Michele Verdethe Oscar-nominated writer of Loganto start over again. The report also states that word on the street is that the studio is looking to make the film, now slated for 2025, on a budget under $100 million, a departure from Marvel’s big-spending strategy.

There’s a lot to delve into, but one of the film’s original screenwriters, Michael Starburrywho worked on a draft of the Lama script before the Hollywood strikes, he felt compelled to dispel some of the claims, stating in a post on X:

I worked on a draft before the strike. I’ve never seen a version where Blade was the fourth protagonist or that was a “female-led narrative full of life lessons”, but I suppose a lot could have happened since I had something to do with it. It was in 99% of the scripts I was a part of.

It’s interesting to know that someone who worked closely with the script has denied this rumor. It makes you wonder how much what we hear from behind the scenes at Marvel is true. All we really hope is that Blade gets a good script and a great adaptation. You can not wait? Lama?
