After years of trying to get a film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s made, Blumhouse finally made it and it hit theaters this past weekend. This is a project that the manufacturer Jason Blum he wouldn’t give up, even though several people at Blumhouse mocked him for pursuing it because they didn’t think it would ever happen.
The big question was: would the time, effort and work they put into the film pay off? Well, the answer came last weekend when audiences flocked to theaters to watch it!
Universal and Blumhouse Five Nights at Freddy’s The film had a huge opening weekend, grossing $78 million in the United States. The film grossed a total of $130.5 million in its worldwide debut, which is very impressive.
The other impressive thing about these box office numbers is that the film was also released simultaneously on the Peacock streaming service, which goes to show that daily releases may not be as bad for the box office as people think. But imagine how much more the film would have made at the box office if it hadn’t been released on Peacock!
Regardless, this has become Blumhouse’s best worldwide debut of all time, and it’s also the biggest opening weekend for a horror film directed by a woman (Emma Tammi). OH! On top of that, the $78 million domestic debut Five Nights at Freddy’s makes it the biggest opening ever for Halloween weekend.
Five Nights at Freddy’s was made on a production budget of just $20 million, so most of this is already pure profit for Blumhouse and Universal. With how movies have been doing at the box office recently, I was curious how this one would fare, and I was happy to see it succeed!
There’s no doubt that Blumhouse will move forward with more Five Nights at Freddy’s films. This is going to be a great horror franchise.
