Director Shawn Levy says DEADPOOL 3 has “more fucking heart” than you think

When you think of the Deadpool film series, you think of crude humor, action, and violence, but second Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy, the upcoming film has “way more” heart than you might think. In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via CB), the director was clear in his opinion Deadpool 3 will have as much heart and emotion as his other films (Free Guy, The Adam Project, Real Steel):

“I will say this: Fuck more than you think. I’m so wary… but one thing that Ryan and I were very close on was wanting to make Deadpool 3 very consistent and continuous with the franchise.” DNA, but to see where we might evolve in this third film.”

Levy went on to explain that the “evolution” of the Deadpool film franchise was an easy challenge to tackle once one key story detail was established:

“We once knew it was going to be a Wolverine/Deadpool movie, my God! What a gift for any storyteller. Because not only do you have two iconic actors playing their most iconic roles, but you have two characters whose dynamic is already notorious tense. And whenever you’re dealing with characters who start from a place of deep dislike, conflict and difference from each other… the mouth [Deadpool]and the same grumpy, laconic man of few words [Wolverine], what a fantastic formula for storytelling. And ultimately the film has a lot more character and depth and heart than I think anyone expects.”

Confirmed cast includes Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Emma Corrin like the bad guy, Morena Baccarin AND Stefan Kapicic like Vanessa and Colossus, Matthew Macfadyen in an unknown role, Karan Soni as Dopinder, and Leslie Uggam in the role of blind Al. They are united by Brianna Hildebrand AND Shioli Kutsuna will also return to the franchise as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s girlfriend, Yukio. This had already been confirmed Jennifer Garner she will return as Elektra in the film.

Some of the other rumored castings include Brian Cox as William Striker, Owen Wilson like Mobius, Lewis Tan as Shatterstar, Channing Tatum in the role of Gambetto, Taron Edgerton like a different Wolverine, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Tara Strong in the role of Miss Minutes, Tom Hiddleston like Loki, Dafne Keen like X-23, Rebecca Romijn in the role of Corvo, Julian McMahon as Doctor Doom, Liev Schreiber like Sabertooth, Daniel Radcliffe like Wolverine, and Channing Tatum like Gambetto.

Deadpool 3 has been removed from its May 4, 2024 release date, and as of now, no new date has been announced by Marvel Studios or 20th Century Studios. I’m sure we’ll hear more soon, as the film is one of the studio’s top priorities as it returns from the ongoing strike.
