Carla Gugino offers an interesting look at her character in THE FALL OF THE HOUSE USHER

Mike Flanaganthe latest Netflix series, The Fall of House Usher, it’s an incredible show! Flanagan is a great storyteller, and this latest show of his is damn fantastic! I’ve already seen it twice and I’m pretty damn impressed with the story and character development.

One of the main stars of the series is Carla Gugino, who plays the enigmatic and seductive Verna. There has been a lot of discussion about the character and her true identity, but now Gugino talks about her character, offering some insights and clarifying some things. We’re getting into spoiler territory, so if you don’t want to know anything you might want to skip this.

Over the course of eight episodes, Verna is present at the death of Roderick Usher’s children and beloved granddaughter. Some of these deaths she orchestrates herself.

At the end of the series it is revealed that Roderick and his sister Madeline made a deal with Verna in that bar on New Year’s Eve 1979. The deal was that they would be incredibly rich and free from all the consequences of their criminality. actions for the rest of their lives. But… when the time comes to die, their entire lineage must die together. What a gut punch!

So, fans have speculated that Verna could be a demon or even the Devil. One thing we know for sure while watching the series is that she is the personification of the Raven from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem. Her name Verna is even an anogram of Revan.

Speaking about his character, Gugino said in a featurette that you can watch below:

“She is not the Devil… she is not even evil! You might say she is the executor of destiny, or the executor of Karma. Verna is truly a shape-shifter. She manifests herself to each person in the moments before their death, while they can see it. Verna is giving each of these people the most honest conversation they will ever have in their lives.”

“People with a lot of privilege and a lot of power have the opportunity to do good things or do bad things, and she gives them the opportunity to make a different decision.”

This is as clear as the explanation we’ll get about his character. Gugino was great in this role!
