The Hulu series The 1619 project and the Showtime feature Nothing is forever received three top nominations each today as the Cinema Eye Honors announced the first round of nominees for the prestigious documentary-focused awards.
The 1619 project, based on Nikole Hannah-Jones’s Pulitzer Prize-winning examination of slavery in North America and its impact today, received nominations for Best Anthology Series, Best Broadcast Editing and Best Broadcast Cinematography. Oprah Winfrey, Oscar winner Roger Ross Williams and Hannah-Jones are among the producers of the six-part series.
Nothing is foreverDirector Jason Kohn’s brilliant exploration of the world of diamonds—the true nature and rise of untraceable “synthetic” diamonds—earned nominations for Best TV Movie, Best Broadcast Editing and Best Broadcast Cinematography. The Cinema Eye Honors takes place for the 17th timee Year, “recognizes outstanding artistic achievements in nonfiction and documentary films and series,” including direction, production, cinematography, editing, composition, sound design, visual design “and recognition of participants’ on-camera contributions.”
Nominations in additional categories will be announced on November 9. The 17the The Cinema Eye Honors awards will be presented on January 12 at the New York Academy of Medicine in East Harlem.
In addition to the broadcast categories, Cinema Eye today announced the Audience Choice Awards longlist of 20 films; Fans can vote starting today to determine the winner of this award (including previous nominees). RBG, Summer of the soul, Free soloAnd Navalny).
Cinema Eye also announced the ten films that will be on this year’s Shortlist, the organization’s annual list of semifinalists for the Nonfiction Short Film honor (up to six of those semifinalists will be nominated next month). And the awards ceremony also saw the announcement of the annual Unforgettables list – “a category unique to Cinema Eye that celebrates collaborations between filmmakers and those in front of the camera.”
