Michael Mann confirms that his next film will be HEAT 2

Director Michael Mann confirmed that his next film project will be Heat 2. She shared the news while speaking at an event in London over the weekend. When requested by Deadline at the event if Heat 2 would be his next film, the director replied:

“YES. Meg Gardiner and I wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out just as we were shooting Ferrari. It went really well. I plan to shoot it next time.”

Earlier this year, it was reported that Ferrari was leading Adam Driver was in negotiations to play the young Neil McCauley, Robert De Nirothe character of, in Heat 2. When asked about that casting, Mann laughed and said:

“Maybe. Let’s not talk about it yet. Let’s put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic, which is pretty intense. We like each other and had a great time working together artistically.

So, it seems like there’s a strong possibility of seeing Mann and Driver work together again Heat 2, which is pretty exciting. I was hoping Mann would get this movie made and now that he’s moving on, I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Mann previously explained: “It’s totally planned to be a movie. Is it a modest film? No. Is it a very expensive series? No. It will be a great film. Mann also seems confident that the sequel will be a success, previously saying:

“It’s sustained in the culture. He is known. I might fool myself into thinking the whole world knows about him, but if you watch the prominence of him in home videos for over 20 years, this thing really has legs. People still watch it, people still talk about it. It’s a brand. It’s kind of a Heat universe, in a way. And this certainly justifies a very ambitious film.”

The sequel will tell the story of what led up to the events of the first film, set in 1989, and what happened after, set in 2002. It covers “the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and elite criminals Neil McCauley (De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Kilmer) and Nate (Jon Voight), and features the same extraordinary ambition, scope, rich characterizations and attention to detail as the epic.”

This new story “leads into the events of the film and then goes beyond, introducing new characters on both sides of the law, new high-level heists and breathtaking cinematic action sequences. From the streets of Los Angeles to the inner sanctum of Taiwanese crime syndicates rivals in Paraguay to a massive drug cartel money laundering operation just across the border in Mexico, Heat 2 highlights the dangerous workings of international criminal organizations and the agents who pursue them while providing a comprehensive portrait of the men and women who inhabit both worlds.Operatic in scope, Heat 2 is gripping, moving and tragic: a masterpiece of crime fiction from one of American cinema’s most innovative and influential directors.

It is explained that the book jumps between two time periods, “the first follows Chris Shiherlis as he tries to evade the LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna following the bank robbery gone wrong and moves into new territory in the Los Angeles area. three borders and in Southeast Asia. The second storyline takes readers back to Chicago in 1988, when McCauley, Shiherlis, and their high-flying crew are picking up scores on the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Chicago. At the same time, Hanna is cutting her teeth as a rising star in the Chicago Police Department, chasing down an ultraviolent gang of home invaders. The consequences of McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative.
