Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four the reboot is currently in development with WandaVision‘S Matt Shakman set to direct the film. The film is currently scheduled for release in 2025, so the creative team is fully committed to development. They know the story they’ll be telling and during a recent interview with the director, he teased that this film will be very different from anything we’ve seen in the MCU so far.
His comments are truly intriguing and I couldn’t love it more for Marvel Studios to start thinking outside the box when it comes to the films they’re making. During an interview with Collider, Shakman said:
“It’s different in so many ways. I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we’re doing things very differently from a story perspective, from an approach to a cinematic perspective, which really suits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can’t. But I think it will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and certainly unlike anything Marvel you’ve ever seen before.
Speaking about the pre-production work done on the film, he said:
“We’ve been non-stop. Despite the strikes, yes, we’ve been working with effects and production design and building our world, and it’s been incredibly exciting. You know, how do you translate those skills into live-action in a dynamic way?” ways? Because some things that work beautifully in John Byrne and Jack Kirby are a little harder when you spin them. How do you make sure things are exciting but also based on a scientific approach, which is also part of the Fantastic Four? that I love? There are some things I’m really excited about. I can’t say too much, you know?”
While he can’t say much, he said enough to make me excited to see what he and the creative team are planning for this film. I really hope this film offers something extraordinarily unique! I wanted to see a great Fantastic Four movie, but given the direction Marvel has taken with their projects, I was a little worried.
When it comes to the movie, Kevin Feige stated that Marvel’s first family will be a big pillar of the MCU’s future. He said:
“The only other one in terms of me personally and my 23-year history is the Fantastic Four. We’ve talked about mutants and the whole aspect of the Marvel world, but the Fantastic Four are the basis for everything that came after in the comics. There have certainly been versions of it [on screen], but they never inhabit the MCU narrative. And that’s something that’s really exciting for us. People will start hearing more about it soon. We think this will be a great pillar of the MCU in the future, just as they have been in the comics for 50 or 60 years.”
Marvel Producer Stefano Broussard previously promised that the film will be a true celebration of the source material from the comics:
“I don’t presume to know everything about that movie; I’m not necessarily working on it. But one of the founding principles of Marvel, which goes back to Iron Man and the casting of Tony that I think has resonated today, is to embrace the source material and these comics that have been around forever. They’re older than me, and I imagine they’re older than you too. I’ve been around a while for a reason, [so we] lean on that.
Not much is known about the project. Casting is “getting ready” and the studio is looking to cast Sue Storm first. So they will build the team around her.
Fantastic Four arrives in theaters February 14, 2025.
