Guillermo del Toro explains why he didn’t direct PACIFIC RIM 2 and why he never saw it

Director Guillermo del Toro recently talked about what happened with Rim of the Pacific 2 and why he failed to direct it. I remember the director was excited to work on the sequel, then suddenly he stepped down as director and was replaced by Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil).

So what happened? It all depended on the availability of the studios where she intended to shoot the film. The studio gave up on keeping them safe for him. He explained in an interview with Collider:

“We were getting ready to do it, it was different from the first one, but it was a continuation of a lot of the things I was trying to do. Then it happened that—I mean, that’s why life is crazy, right?—they had to give a deposit for the stops at 5pm otherwise we would have missed the Toronto stops for many months.

“So, I said, ‘Don’t forget we’re going to miss stages,’ and the five came and went, and we missed stages. They said, “Well, we can shoot it in China.” And I’m like, “What do you mean we?” [Laughs] “I have to go do Shape of Water.”

Then, the director went on to direct The Shape of Water, which ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture in 2017, while also winning the Best Director award. As for Pacific Rim: Uprising, the movie ultimately wasn’t very good. Del Toro then admitted that he hadn’t even seen the sequel and explained why by saying:

“I haven’t seen the final film because it’s like watching home movies of your ex-wife. It’s terrible if they are good and worse if they are bad, or the opposite. You don’t want to know. So I didn’t see it. I read the final script and it was very different. Some elements were the same but very different.

Set a decade after the events of the first film, the sequel follows a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including Jake Pentecost, son of the legendary Stacker Pentecost, who once helped save the world from the monstrous Kaiju. The story revolves around a mysterious rogue Jaeger causing destruction, hinting at a larger looming threat. As new threats emerge from both rebel Jaegers and Kaiju, these young pilots must band together to prevent global annihilation, working to preserve the legacy of their ancestors and once again save humanity from the brink of extinction .

Did you like it Pacific Rim: Revolt? Do you think del Toro would have made a better sequel?
