Robin Williams’daughter Zelda recently took to Instagram to criticize the AI recreations of her father, the legendary comedian who passed away in 2014. As you know, AI has become a hot topic in Hollywood, and when it comes to Zelda who sees these AI reconstructions of her father, she understandably calls “disturbing on a personal level.”
As for the actors’ strike, SAG-AFTRA has listed AI renderings as a “mandatory subject of bargaining” against the AMPTP, and this includes “the use of the actor’s voice, likeness, or performance to train an artificial intelligence system designed to generate new visual, audio or audiovisual content”.
Zelda shared her thoughts on Instagram, saying: “I am not an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI. I have witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad. This is not theoretical, this is very, very real.
He added: “I’ve heard before that the AI made its ‘voice’ say what people wanted, and while I personally find it disturbing, the consequences go far beyond my feelings. Living actors deserve the chance to create characters with their choices, to give voice to cartoons, to dedicate their HUMAN effort and time to the pursuit of performance.
“These recreations are, at best, a poor facsimile of older people,” Zelda concluded, “but at worst, a hideous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should be.” For.”
It’s pretty crazy to see what AI is capable of right now, and it will only get better as the technology improves. It’s a lot of fun to play with and can become an effective tool, but there are definitely things that need to be adjusted with the technology.
