Many people are curious about the upcoming one Barney film that will be the protagonist No AND Black Panther star Daniele Kaluuyaespecially after Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon described it as similar to an A24 film and compared it to the “surrealistic” films of Charlie Kaufmann AND Spike Jonze.
Although this may seem strange for a Barney movie, CEO of Mattel Ynon Kreiz he said the movie won’t be weird. When he was asked about the film during an interview with Semafor, he said:
“That’s getting a lot of reactions. It’s too early to be specific, but I can tell you that we are taking a new approach that will be fun, entertaining and culture-driven. It won’t be a strange film.”
I love that he had to insist that the movie won’t be weird. So what if it was!? Barbie can be considered a strange film, and it was a great success! I think audiences are okay with weirdness these days. The fact that Barney is a weird movie would really be a selling point for me.
Speaking previously about the film, McKeon explained that the film would be aimed more at adults and tap into millennial angst. He explained:
“We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning it for kids. It’s really an adult play. Not that it’s rated R, but it will focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being in your thirties.” , growing up with Barney – just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”
Speaking previously about the film, Kaluuya shared that he thought the idea for Barney’s story could be heartbreaking as well as timely. He said:
“Barney taught us, ‘I love you; you love me. Won’t you say you love me too?’ It’s one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when it’s not true? I thought it was really heartbreaking. I have no idea why, but it seems to make sense. It seems like there’s something unexpected that can be touching but upbeat. Above all right now, I think it’s really, really necessary.”
Whatever they’re doing with the film, the creative team is definitely taking a different direction with the property than people expected.
Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films said in a previous statement: “Working with Daniel Kaluuya will allow us to take an entirely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations. The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s children.”
Davide Carrico of Valparaiso Pictures continued, “Barney is a dinosaur of our imagination, and we can’t wait for ‘I love you, you love me’ to be stuck in our heads everywhere, once again.”
Are any of you curious to see how this Barney movie will end?
