DOCTOR STRANGE director explains that superhero films need to evolve significantly and be original to re-excite fans

The Marvel director Doctor Strange, Scott Derrickson, has some thoughts on the current state of superhero/comic book movies and how to get fans excited about the genre again. He believes that studios and filmmakers need to bring more originality to these projects and that the films need to evolve significantly.

During a recent interview with ComicBook, the director was asked if he would return to directing comic book films, and this was his response:

“I think we’re in a moment where audiences, myself included, don’t want to see anything that’s too close to what’s been done. I’m much more interested in bold spin-offs than bold genre experimentation with comic book cinema. I think this is how you get the audience to re-engage and make them evolve in a meaningful way. That would be my big need to get back into that kind of IP-based comics world.

He continued saying:

“You can create something that is original and that people have never seen before thanks to intellectual property, but it has to be the right intellectual property and you have to be willing to treat it with originality. But I think audiences now want original programming in event films. This is a major change that’s happened, and it’s significant, and I just hope that studios don’t continue to flog the movie production of sequel franchises in a way that costs us more time before we realize, hey, audiences are really ready for new material.”

I can agree with this. Superhero movies are simply failing with audiences these days. One of the most recent ones I saw was Blue Beetle, and while many liked it, for me there was nothing new, original or different about it. It told a story we’ve seen hundreds of times before.

We’re definitely at a point where superhero movies need to evolve and start doing unique and different things. Getting more of the same, sub-standard storytelling won’t do it.

When talking about why he was interested in making a Doctor Strange movie, Derrickson said, “I haven’t Doctor Strange because it was a Marvel movie or because it was a movie based on a comic book. I did it because it was specifically the Doctor Strange comics, which I loved, and had really strong, powerful feelings about, and felt like I was the right director to adapt them.

What do you think needs to happen with superhero movies to keep audiences interested and engaged?
