THE TOXIC AVENGER remake director explains the whole “gut” thing.

One of the craziest things that has been brought up The toxic avenger the remake came from the film’s sound editor, Casey Genton, several months ago, and it was about “Butt Guts.” As you can imagine, this piqued the interest of fans. Genton said at the time:

When they tested it, fans of the film were over the moon with the film. […] It’s nice out there. I think it’s a different crack. They’re giving the fans what they want, for sure. There’s no shortage of – I know everyone references the kid’s head getting run over and stuff like that. I think there was an iteration of the movie that didn’t have enough of that, so they made a very — I don’t want to spoil it. But that’s it, it’s been dubbed the “guts” scene, and it’s probably the best way to match that “head run over” energy everyone is looking for. So it fits in with the fan base and I think it’s fun.”

So what exactly is going on with the “Butt Guts” scene? Well, during an interview with /Film, the film’s director was asked what that means. This was his response:

“So you go and make the film and there’s a limited budget, then there’s the scene and you have to operate within those constraints. And so we shot a scene where Toxie fights the bad guys in the restaurant. And it was actually done entirely by – as soon as the fight starts, once the first guy gets slashed in the face, you don’t really see what’s happening. You see, from the outside perspective, blood splatters on the window and things like that. But then when we got into post-production, I think because Legendary was happy with what they were seeing or excited about it or whatever, they came back and said, “Would you like to add some additional shots?” Not like a whole new sequence or a whole new character, but just a day of shooting just for some fun stuff. We can somehow adjust the budget to do that.”

“And so some of those shots that we took were just some little digital effects Phil Tippet the study did. But one of them was what became known as the Butt Guts Unit, which was born this way. And I’m so happy you started the interview with, “She made you laugh and was that the justification?” There’s never been a better example than Butt Guts, to which I thought, “Yeah, man, we could just have these little out-of-context flashes of what Toxie’s doing in that restaurant.” At night we were mixing the sound of the film because I was actually working on another film during the day, so everyone was a little tired and energetic. And I was like, ‘I think what we should do is have Toxie take his mop and rip this guy’s pants off.’ And one of the film’s assistant editors, named Delaney, simply says, “He’s going to rip his guts out of his butt?” And I said, “No…yes.”

“And then it came time to write to the exec at Legendary, these very responsible and powerful people, ‘He’s going to put his fist up his ass and take his guts out of his ass.’ Submit! And then I woke up the next morning and thought, ‘Oh, I should have added a little more context or explained myself a little better.’ For some reason, he wrote back to me, saying, ‘Yeah, man, we can do that.’ And so then we ended up in Los Angeles, we shot one day in a special effects shop where they created a fake butt that had a cavity in the middle that you could pull the intestines out of. And so we had a dedicated unit whose sole purpose was shooting that scene. There were only two shots in the movie, but it was one of the ones where I was like, ‘Yeah, that makes me laugh.’ And hopefully enough people will have a similar reaction to that.’”

Well, it looks just wonderful! Fans of films with a lot of blood and guts will love this film. There’s no doubt that this scene will be completely bonkers.

Peter Dinklage he plays downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely retelling lives up to its environmental themes as Winston clashes with the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends and his community.”

The synopsis also points out: “While this story exists on its own terms, the spirit undoubtedly remains connected to the original. Troma fans old and new will be pleased to know that the film has been rated ‘R’ for violence and gore, per Troma tradition.”

The film is also the protagonist Elijah Wood, Julia Davis, Taylor Paige, Kevin BaconAND Jacob Tremblay. There is no release date yet, but the first reactions to the film show that the public is very satisfied with how it turned out! I can’t wait to see it!
